Many people today are dealing with tooth loss issues. Caries, gum infections, traumas, and genetic factors are among the main causes of this scenario, which emerge as a result of not maintaining oral and dental health. Tooth loss is not simply a cosmetic issue; it also has an impact on speaking, chewing, and digestive functions.
What exactly is an implant?
Implant therapy is a method of replacing a missing tooth by implanting an artificial root composed of titanium. The artificial root is screwed to the jawbone and eventually fuses with it, allowing the lost tooth to operate artificially. Unlike previous dental treatments, implant treatment replaces a missing tooth with a completely new, natural-looking but artificial tooth. Furthermore, implant treatment is used following tooth extraction or in cases of tooth loss.
How Is an Implant Made?
Implant tooth placement is typically done in three stages. In the first stage, a titanium screwed prosthetic root is implanted in the jawbone beneath the gum. This surgery is conducted under local anaesthetic, so the patient does not experience any pain during the procedure. In the second stage, the artificial root is left to heal for a few months, during which time it is firmly incorporated into the jawbone. Finally, the dentist applies a porcelain veneer on top of the fake root to make the tooth appear natural.
Implant treatment is more time consuming and costly than other dental procedures. In the long run, however, implant teeth provide a more permanent answer.
Who Can Have Dental Implants?
Many people who have lost teeth can benefit from dental implants. However, aspects such as the patient’s overall health, oral structure, and bone density should be evaluated before therapy.
The following characteristics are desired for optimal implant treatment:
- be at least 18 years old
- have a healthy mouth and gums
- Having enough bone density and volume
To evaluate whether dental implants are correct for you, your dentist will do a complete oral exam. If the jaw bone tissue necessary for implant therapy is insufficient, additional surgical procedures such as a jaw bone graft may be required.
What are the Benefits of Dental Implants?
Individuals benefit greatly from implant teeth. The following are the primary benefits:
- Following implant treatment, the person’s chewing function is restored and contributes to digestion.
- When properly managed for, implants can be used for a lifetime, unlike other therapies.
- Because of their natural appearance and aesthetics, they cannot be identified from other teeth.
- It has been observed that the implant adds positively to the self-confidence of many people.
